Having lived in both Beijing and Shanghai, I figured I've already tasted the best and the most authentic Peking Duck of all. But in the world of food, it is never to be estimated that the original will only preside in the land it was born. So here I was, at Peking Gourmet Inn: lines peeking through the door, incessant clamors from hostess' stand and people eagerly rushing in as their names were being called. Naively thinking that I've already been there, tasted the original in the land of Mao, I waited without much expectation.
First course, Peking Duck. Mirna, a delightful lady who handled our Peking Duck, adroitly sliced the duck trimming out the fat neatly tucked under the skin. Thankful to her steady hands, as soon as the duck landed on our table, it was ready to be rolled. And oh... The Glory. I'm speechless even recalling this indescribable experience.
After the duck, we proceeded to Peking Gourmet Inn's other star items, Jeo-Yan Shrimps and Szechuan Beef Propers. Shrimps were a bit too oily for my taste, even though it was heavily topped off with the spices that were supposed to leverage the grease. A single bite was enough. On the other hand, Szechuan Beef Propers was the most popular dish on our table after Peking Duck made its glorious exit to our bellies. It was crisped to perfection with right amount of soy sauce and sweetness. If I were to go back (which I will in due time!), I would again order a Peking Duck (that fed 4 of us), Szechuan Beef Proper and Lemon Chicken without hesitating even a moment so close to the glory of this place.
